Steven Gerrard Linked to Rangers Job

Whispers out of Scotland have turned into a bit of a roar today as outlets such as the BBC have begun issuing reports that Steven Gerrard is at the top candidate to replace Graeme Murty as manager of Rangers FC. Gerrard has spent the past year and a half working as a coach within Liverpool Football Club’s academy system, with this past season helming the U-18 team.

It may seem a bit of a surprise for Stevie to be linked to such a big job with limited experience, but it must be noted that his U-18 side have had relative success this year. Currently, the squad sit second in the U-18 Premier League. Also, Gerrard was tasked with leading the U-19s in the UEFA Youth Cup, where they finished top of their group and advanced to the quarter finals before losing to Manchester City 3-2 on aggregate.

Stevie has shown loads of promise in coaching up the kids and it looks fair that with his name recognition, history on the pitch, and current track record, clubs might be looking to him to take command.
For Liverpool’s part, Jurgen Klopp had nothing but support and praise for Stevie:
“I am not worried.
”Whatever he wants to do we will support him in that. There is no decision. I can imagine clubs are interested in signing Stevie, [he has] massive experience as a player so I would think about him signing for a club. We will support him in all directions.”
And there you have it. It looks like Steven Gerrard’s desire for a post-playing career in football is well on its way. Whether he takes this job or decides to continue to ply his trade within his home club, remains to be seen but there can be of no doubt that his long-term goal will be to take the manager’s spot along the touch line at Anfield.
