Semenya grabs Double Gold

South African middle distance runner Caster Semenya chased down the elusive 800/1500m double - and a Games record - completing the set with the 800m victory tonight.

Stopping the clock at 1:56.68, she finished almost two seconds clear of silver medallist, Kenya's Margaret Nyairera Wambui. Semenya is only the third woman in Commonwealth Games history to complete the double.

GC2018 was the two-time Olympic and three-time world champion's first Commonwealth Games and she didn't miss the chance to leave her mark on the track.

Kenya's Conseslus Kipruto set a new Games record for the men's 3000m steeplechase in 8:10.08. In the discus, Jamaica's Fredrick Dacres threw 68.20m to break the Games record. Another fell in the men's 10,000m, with 5000m champion, Uganda's Joshua Kiprui Cheptegei, completing the distance double and smashing the previous Games record in 27:19.62. In a dramatic finale to the women's pole vault, Canada's Alysha Newman met her national record and set a new Games record of 4.75m. She even had enough energy to backflip on the mat after her winning jump. It came after New Zealand's Eliza McCartney broke the Games record earlier with a 4.70m jump.
