Jay-Z has heaped praise on the “amazing” rapping styles of his peers Snoop Dogg and Eminem by sharing his imitations in a new interview.
The hip-hop mogul recently sat down with talk show veteran David Letterman for his Netflix series My Next Guest Needs No Introduction, and in a new trailer for theupcoming episode, JAY-Z is featured explaining what makes a great rapper.
“You can have a great voice, and you can just almost say anything,” he shares, before quoting Snoop’s opening words on his classic Dr. Dre collaboration, Nuthin’ But a ‘G’ Thang.
“Like, I think Snoop Dogg has a great voice, he can say, ‘One, two, three, and to the four,’ and it’s like, ‘Oh my god!’ It just sounds good…”
“Or you can be someone like Eminem and just have amazing cadence, and (be) almost like the syncopation (of the song)…,” JAY-Z says, as he shows off his impression of the Stan hitmaker.
“You almost become this percussion inside the music,” he continues, “so there’s multiple ways to be really good. Some people just have it all.”
The full hour-long interview, which premieres on the streaming service on Friday, is one of few chats JAY-Z has granted in recent years.
Like his superstar wife Beyonce, he has become more selective of the outlets he talks to, only opening up about the meanings behind songs for his highly-personal album, 4:44, with podcast Rap Radar and The New York Times as he promoted the project last year.
