The Federal Government has announced a mouth watering $5,000 reward for each Gold medal won at the 2018 Commonwealth games in the Gold Coast Australia beginning on Wednesday.
Also a Silver medal will attract $3,000 while bronze medalists will get $2000 each. Nigerian Sports Minister Solomon Dalung announced this to the Athletes when the Organizers of the XXI Commonwealth Games officially held a welcome ceremony for Team Nigeria at the Games village on Tuesday.
Teams' arrival at the Games Village is not officially acknowledged until a Welcome ceremony is held for the various contingents.
The athletes were entertained by a dance troupe from the Munujali tribe.
Nigerian flag was raised and the National Anthem sung. A commemorative indigenous shield was then presented to the Minister of Youth and Sports Barrister Solomon Dalung while Team Nigeria in return presented the talking drum to their hosts.
Dalung used the occasion to call for needs to go back to the games initial concept of investing in youth development, providing scholarships and according opportunities to young people to travel across the Commonwealth."
Turning to his athletes, he said that Nigerians expect nothing from them but to surpass their record in the last games."
He charged them to compete fairly without tarnishing the image of the country.
He told them that President Buhari will only be happy to receive clean medals even if they're of the lowest cadre than ten tainted medals.
The XXI Commonwealth Games open on April 4, 2018 at the Carrara stadium Gold Coast from 7pm.
