Youths suspected to be political miscreants on Saturday attacked Dahiru Yabo, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Sokoto State and an avid critic of Governor Aminu Tambuwal.
Daily Independent reports that the incident, according to witnesses, occurred in the front of Tambuwal’s private residence shortly after a wedding ceremony of the governor’s cousin’s daughter.
Yabo, who was one of the dignitaries that attended the event, was ambushed by the irate youths, who attacked the vehicle conveying him out of the venue. A witness confirmed that it took the efforts of security personnel stationed at the governor’s residence to save the ugly situation.
In a statement made available to journalists in Sokoto, Yabo, a former commissioner and staunch supporter of President Muhammadu Buhari, described the attack as an assassination attempt on him because of his political views in recent times.
According to him, “The political assassination attempt on me at the governor’s residence yesterday left no one in doubt to their low level of sensible and rational judgment.
“The acts clearly indicated their intention to lynch me and possibly send me to early grave as instructed by their political godfather and sponsors.
“It is, therefore, apparent on every responsible members of Sokoto family to come on board in this noble cause aimed at dislodging this crop of leadership that is very insensitive to the plight of its citizenry.”
Attempts made to reach DSP Cordelia Nwawe, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, to confirm the incident failed, as calls and messages sent to her mobile phone were not responded to.
